Troubleshooting appliance issues can seem daunting for many people. Most repairs, though, are readily achieved if the right steps and sequences are followed. Always unplug applliances and turn the gas off to gas appliances before troubleshooting and/or disassembling them. It is usually a good idea to turn of the water supply to washers and dishwashers as well before doing any repairs.

However, in some cases troubleshooting is very difficult if the power is turned off. This is because a technician sometimes has to observe a an appliance's operation and failure while the cabinet is removed. Also, some diagnostics are only achieved by following voltage paths to certain points and determining where they stop or fail. In these cases, an individual takes on increased risk of shock or injury. We can't officially recommend anyone do this. Appliance technicians must observe basic safety rules when repairing appliances for the safety of themselves and the consumer. We always check voltages with a voltage pen that requres no physical contact with contctors. It is also a good idea to keep one hand behind your back when doing so, as to deny the voltage that is being check from having an injurious path through your body.
